Dreading the holidays and the changes you need to make?

Me too, but this month I share what helped us to enjoy time with the family.

Tips on helping your loved one with reading comprehension and conversations

My husband has always been an avid reader but after his stroke he needed to make some changes so that he could once again enjoy the book in front of him. This month, he shares some tips that he has used with his kindle.

  1. Unable to remember a character in the book - Highlight the character’s name and you are able to see information.

  2. If you are having a problem with a word - highlight that word and a dictionary appears.

  3. Adjust your font size and make it larger so it is more readable. Helvetica is one of most readable.

  4. Issues with the blue light, change the color to remove the blue light. Helps when reading in the dark.

Some additional tips regarding being able to comprehend and participate in conversations.

  1. Processing a conversation takes longer and when in a group the conversation moves quickly and by the time they are ready to talk, the conversation passed, and they then remain quiet. Ask friends and family to give them time to process.

  2. Finding a word or understanding a word meaning also takes time. Again, give them time, don’t jump in a finish their thought for them.

  3. They do much better with one-on-one conversations or in a small group.
